As far as I understand it, though in fairness with the caveat that some of my knowledge is secondhand and not from a primary source, old Crom first appears in a 9thC hagiography of St Patrick, but not the two previous 7thC texts, and develops from here into the later folk character. He does not occur in the Book of Invasions alongside the Fir Bolg, Fomori, or what would presumably be his fellow Tuatha de Danann.
In the text Crom is the chief god of the Gaels represented by an enormous gold effigy, a god of death, famine, and harvest who was worshipped on Samhain and firstborn children were sacrificed to. He is, somewhat lazily in my opinion, explicitly associated with Moloch in the text.
If this is not constructed from whole cloth we could be looking at a retelling of Lugh, a storm god of the Tuatha, slaying his grandfather Balor, King of the Fomori (Titans/Jotuns) and a god of blight and famine, to bring in the new harvest in which St Patrick takes on the mantle of Lugh and Balor as Crom is recast of the chief deity of the wicked pagans.

Reading pagan epics and comparing them to Christianized versions, then to histories and fictions in the Cristian tradition, and then comparing them to Christian gospel, it is glaringly apparent that pagans and heathens, particularly of those many races who lived outside the path of the scythe of civilization, were more pious, more religious, more prayerful, more holy and more concerned with the sacred and the divine than, than the most pious Christians. There is simply an assumption that pagan or heathen means non-religious, non prayerful, etc., when in fact Christians of all denominations in all ages demonstrate less piety through their literature than Leonidas of Sparta or Alexander the Great demonstrated in their military life or than loomed apparent in all of ancient epic.
I do not know what the mechanism of self-secularization is embedded in all Christian denominations, but in light of the fact that Christian authors from late antiquity through the resent day demystify, secularize and shackle with temporal chains the divine aspects of their own faith, one would be shocked to discover that traitors to their ancestral faith, having converted to Christianity, would not purvey demeaning versions of the Old Gods.
The signature of Christianity was and is a lessoning of metaphysical wonder on one hand and of religious piety on the other.
Some Christian readers might object.
If so, think, do you pray before and after every work shift, creative project, hunt, hike, fight, training session, family gathering, political meeting, podcast, etc.?
What about sacrifice?
[Sure, it is prohibited because it was done for you in ancient times. Just the elimination of sacrifice from religious life cuts devotion energies by at least half.]
The ancient pagans and heathens did worship daily, or at least wanted us to think they had, setting it as a measure for the future.
Every athletic contest was a sacred religious observation.
In modern life, the only such observances are prayers to our secular gods on earth, our governments, in the form of a National Anthem, where we worship on one hand our rulers in the ancient civic tradition of Rome and on the other hand, ourselves, in the modern conceit that there is no unknown.
Christians intentionally mischaracterized the Winged Serpent.
The Norse Sagas, preserved by Christians, have their own inaccuracies, I am assured.
Longfellow demoted He-Who-Makes-Rivers, the Woden/Christ of the Iroquois into a boy of adventure.
Herakles, son of a god and a woman who fought, and acted and labored for and against kings and gods, was reduced to a mythic strongman by those who worshipped the murdered passive turner of cheeks.
I am sure that we have been bequeathed a tainted pre-holocaust record of what our conquered and betrayed ancestors once believed. But I'd wager its better than blank oblivion.
The painting of an ancient good as a current evil is a practice raging across the pocked face of our own diseased society:
-Those ethnicities of American men most likely to be armed with rifles and least likely to commit violent crime are cast as the evil enemy of passive humanity.
-The race of people who slaughters, mobs, rapes, robs and shoots their own and others every single day in this CUNTRY are lauded as sacred victims, incapable of violent action even as they chimp-out on video endlessly and the masses yet believe their lie.
-When a man is attacked it is his fault is one of our societies most foundational truths, as is,
-When a woman is raped it is her fault.
All of our civic truths are lies:
-The police protect and serve despite declaring that they do not!
-The Government exists to benefit you!
In all times, the act of declaring right as wrong, of up under down, of good now bad brings nothing but power to the Elite. This is the ages old process of rulers and priests imitating The Creator, usurping eternity in favor of temporary advantage in the tiny, idiot mirrors that have replaced the minds of their slaves, claiming His will blasphemy and their petty aspirations Holy and they are always believed by most until the fall.
This is Civilization's greatest mechanic, to replace truth with lies and minds with mantras, ultimately turning humans into marionettes.
