THE Man Question
‘A Self-sufficient Apex Predator at Its Physical and Intellectual Peak’: A Man Question from Armando
© 2015 James LaFond
NOV/12/15
"Hello:
"I have a non-boxing related question today; well maybe it may relate to boxing a little. What advice or suggested reading would you give to a young male such as myself seeking to become, to put it plainly, a self-sufficient apex predator at its physical and intellectual peak?
"PS: Thank you for the 'No B.S. Boxing articles.' They're really informative and are helping me to improve my ring combat efficiency. I still have trouble keeping aggressive machine gun punchers off sparring, but expect to improve gradually using your tips and advice from my current boxing coach."
-Armando
I’m glad the No B.S. Boxing is helping, Armando.
First things first, Armando, keeping high volume punchers off of you requires punishment. That is why I am stressing the jab almost exclusively. Because to really punish a decent boxer you need to hit him with a stiff jab every time he shifts his weight forward, and counter him with a right cross whenever he rips a hook and misses. Study W. Klitschko, all of his films, good and bad. He is the model of the punishing boxer.
You have to make the high volume puncher shy.
I will do another jab section tomorrow.
A Reading List for Becoming an Apex Predator?
I like the fact that you referred to yourself as an “it” in “apex predator at its physical and intellectual peak.” You must be able to objectify yourself as an instrument of will—your detached will—to have the best chance at dominating in a predatory environment.
Instead of a reading list of books, I will give you the list of top predators in their field, which is what you need to read about. You can do no worse than starting with a reading of The Deadliest Men by Paul Kirchner as well as the sequel, reviewed here. 85 Reasons For Being A Pacifist This is your best bargain for one stop apex predator shopping.
Since you are a boxer you should read Jack Johnson’s autobiography, or at least watch the following documentary. The Unforgiven Fighter: A Film Review.
On the intellectual side, check out these reviews about the men who achieved at the highest levels in both physical and intellectual realms.
For the two most savage predators who did not make Kirchner’s lists, check out these two.
The Liver-Eater: ‘A Man Among Men’
And finally, as far as dealing with the modern street situation, particularly in urban areas, I have two books that I regard as a must read for someone who wants to survive in these times:
