B is a religious reader who corrected a statement of mine which I have repeated a few times, and which is inaccurate, in that Middle Eastern religions are not the products of Man’s interaction with desert environment. According to Campbell’s comparative scheme Judaism, Christianity, Sumerian, Egyptian, and other civilized faiths that sprang from the region are “seeded earth” religions infused with “pastoral [nomadic] elements” founded in what historians used to call “the Fertile Crescent” that wraps around the Arabian Peninsula. Islam, might have been codified in desert environs, but was based on such religions. What I really think heathens like I are discussing when mentioning the incompatibility of the severe land management models employed by Christian invaders to maim environments generally more lush than the homeland of these religions, is the importation of a domesticated gardening mentality into an ecological zone better suited to other models. This is also a concept much older than Christianity, as exemplified by the cautionary tale of Gilgamesh and Enkidu demolishing the Cedar Forest and then suffering the wrath of Heaven, which anti-dates Christianity by at least 2,000 years. Overall, I would say my opinion is that there is some genetic, tribal link with the environment in which a society took form in and that a society is morally stronger when its metaphysics and ethical doctrine are based on spiritual precepts likewise formed in that same environment. That said, I like B’s view better than my own.

I agree that the root of Europe's fall to Muslims is in Christianity. I don't think the desert nature of Christianity has anything to do with it. Christianity was born in Galilee and the environs of Jerusalem, which were heavily forested, and then grew in Rome, Greece and Turkey, all quite green. The compromise they made with the local cults were mirrored by Islam, which still has these mystery religions with a thin Islamic facade, like the Alawites.
I also don't think there is anything particularly desert-based about Judaism, from which both Christianity and Islam sprung; we had 40 years in the desert after several centuries in fertile, green Goshen, preceded by our forefathers in the green highlands of Canaan and then 1000+ years in the same highlands (where I currently live.) Before that, our forefather Abraham came from the green highlands of upper Mesopotamia, and the Babylonian Talmud was codified in the academies located in modern-day Iraq, which is a nasty place but not desert, rather mud-plain. The Torah is written for agricultural and sheep-herding mountaineers. Further, when you look at the faiths of the desert people to our east, they were not monotheists but a nasty piece of work, like the Moabites who worshiped Chemosh and sacrificed their children to him. Similarly, the pre-Islamic desert Arabs were child-sacrificing polytheists.
The root of Christianity's downfall is in its selling point, which is that it's supposed to be the inner spiritual values of Judaism without its difficult external commandments. I.e., Judaism tells you to circumcise yourself and then tells you that G-d wants a circumcised heart, meaning someone who subjects his animal desires to G-d's will. Christianity says, you don't need to actually circumcise yourself, as long as you circumcise your heart. And so it goes with every commandment. The problem is that the actual commandments are not arbitrary, and their inner essence can't survive without the outer form. And once you've let one guy (Jesus) decide which commandments G-d really means and which he doesn't, then the next guy (Paul) goes further down that road. Then eventually there's Luther throwing out the stuff from the Catholics which he finds extraneous, then the Quakers and Puritans throwing out the parts of Luther they don't like, then the Unitarians and Universalists work over Quakerism and Puritanism, and eventually your religion basically involves listening to a tattooed lesbian pastor telling you that the holiest thing in the world is a black rapist with AIDS. Once that happens, your societal immune system is so weakened that your own parasites start eating you, plus you get a bunch of new, Muslim parasites from the outside.
The Muslims don't have it any better-since their religion was a knockoff of Judaism created by an illiterate Arab rapist, the eventual endpoint is that after spreading worldwide, it remakes its adherents into the image of its founder; aggressive, squabbling retards incapable of maintaining any semblance of civil society. Those Italian kids are willing to convert to Islam to keep from getting raped and having their heads cut off, not because they find its tenets admirable and convincing, or because they see its fruits as desirable. They just have been stripped (by the decay of their society described above) of social cohesion or the ability to defend themselves as a group, so if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
