A Sentence of Buried History
One Tiny Lie Among Many
© 2017 James LaFond
JAN/27/17
“Received March 2nd of 1791 of Mrs. Anna Stoner my freedom dues, due me as a servant to her in full for said freedom dues and all demands whatsoever—”
Witnesses present
Frederick Lampart
Jacob Stoner
Elizabeth Nash Samon
The above hand written document is a manumission hand bill incorrectly archived under African American Slavery in the Maryland Archives. African Americans were designated as Negroes in such documents. It is of interest that Elizabeth seems to have paid off her labor service in cash for an early release.
