‘Of Massed Humanity’
The Soul’s Desert by Robinson Jeffers, 1939
© 2017 James LaFond
MAR/23/17
“They are warming up the old horrors; and all they
     say is echoes of echoes.
Beware of taking sides; only watch.”
These are the first three of this twelve line verse warning that the leaders on all sides of man’s most wicked war were not crooks, charlatans or news-givers, but legitimate representatives of mankind, bent on total war. The Soul’s Desert is an indictment of the author’s species, a reminder to look for God, a confirmation that mankind, in its aggregate, is a sickening beast, fit only to arrange for its own slaughter.
