‘A Thick Spoken Fellow’
James Ferguson on the Run from the Man

February 7, 1765

The Pennsylvania Gazette

RUN away, from the Subscriber, living in Warminster Township, Bucks County, an Irish Servant Man, named James Ferguson, it is thought he will change his Name;

he is about 20 Years of Age, fresh Complexion, a thick spoken Fellow, about 5 Feet 8 Inches high, midling thick set, wears his Hair tied behind, but perhaps he may cut it off;

had on, when he went away, a good Felt Hat, a thin white Shirt, a light blue Cloth Coat, with Metal Buttons, a brown jacket, without Sleeves or Skirts behind, he took with him a brown Worsted Jacket, lined with light red, a white Leather Apron, a good Pair of Buckskin Breeches, with flat Metal Buttons, grey Yarn Stockings, a Strong Pair of Shoes, with Pinchbeek [1] Buckles in them.

Whoever takes up the said Servant, and secures him, so that his Master may have him again, shall have the above Reward, and reasonable Charges, paid by JONATHAN WALTON.

N.B. He came from Ireland in the Jupiter, Capt. Hawthorn.

1. I have found no definition for a pinchbeek buckle. However, I have located a description of a “pinchbeek metal watch,” suggesting that pinchbeeking is a method of crimping light metal. If a reader knows the source of this term please leave a citation in the comment section and it will stand as a footnote in the book American Gulag.
