It Begins
Vibrant Diversity Update  with Jeremy Bentham

Frankfurt always was a cosmopolitan city, especially before reunification. Back then the largest foreign presence was the U.S. Armed Forces. The U.S Army had a high of 277,342 sliders stationed in Germany in June 1962, during the height of the Berlin Wall Crisis. For most of the Cold War there were at least as many U.S. civilian employees and military family members in country as there was American servicemen. The U.S. Government was also the single largest employer of the German people back then too. It probably still is even with the much reduced American military presence in Germany now. Many of the remaining U.S. support installations, such as the pre-positioned material stocks (POMCUS), as well as the repair depots, are staffed almost entirely by German citizens. Major training sites such as Grafenwhor and Hohenfels also have more German employees than they have American soldiers stationed there. Frankfurt was the headquarters of the U.S. Armed Forces radio and television networks (AFN).

Now the foreigners flooding into Germany are definitely not bringing money, jobs and pop culture broadcast over the airwaves with them. Germany will no doubt experience ‘white flight’ soon, as ethnic Germans vote with their feet to escape the vibrant diversity that will come to dominate the country’s major city centers.

For the first time, more than half of Frankfurt residents now have a migrant background, according to official data from the city’s Office of Statistics and Elections.
