Petty Tyrants and a Culture of Fear

Before heading out to dinner after doing an interview with Pat Dixon at Compound Media, in NYC the doll behind the desk engaged me in conversation. She had actually lived through some of the urban renewal bullshit real estate scams that Charles and I had documented with the Harm City Travel Guide down in Baltimore. Liz’s view of societal corruption is local and informed by a sense for politics—scrutiny that is immediate in scope. Interestingly, I read Liz’s examination of petty tyranny and the culture of fear after spending all day annotating sources and writing on Plantation America, a pathetically unproductive place that operated according to a culture of fear and could barely feed itself for the entirety of its 200 year existence. -JL
