This was a very entertaining fight, and, the ring card girls were incredible. Thank God for Corona. The first fight was a blatant robbery of Bryan Vera in California. To begin with Vera is a middleweight and Chavez is a light heavyweight. So that Chavez can’t get KO’d they arrange to fight at super middleweight. Chavez actually declined to get reweighed by HBO. But, he was looking like 190, not 168. Vera was looking like 170.
Chavez did show up in shape, and, considering his rock head and thunderous power, the only question was, ‘would Vera survive the fight?’
Vera did survive a savage action packed fight. In the process he pissed off the ref and got penalized for pushing Chavez’s head down. Vera is crafty for an admitted knucklehead and has an excellent coach, who he failed to listen too enough to make it a close decision. He did well when he jabbed a lot. But anytime he diverted from his jab and turn strategy he literally ended up trading shots with a guy who hit twice as hard as him.
Vera favors a pass block against left hooks to the body, which, as you young fighters will note, is a mistake, as it sets you up for a feint to the body and a hook to the head. Do not use your glove to pick off body shots unless you are turning the corner on the guy and mugging him.
It is astonishing that Vera was never hurt, not even cut. He did pull off a moral victory.
Never-the-less, it is tough to see a man who is so decent and hardworking beaten by an obnoxious, reprehensible clown of a rich boy. In the 12th round, Chavez actually ran away from the man he had been beating up all night long, showing his true colors, his lack of character, and his betrayal of his father’s sport.
Hopefully Vera gets another good pay day and Chavez gets butchered by one of those nasty Russian fighters that are taking over the sport, rescuing it from clowns like Boy Chavez.
