Indeed, what about everyone else? Even being the jingoistic myrmidon that I am, my take on the issue is that if the Army is going to allow so many exceptions to policy for religious reasons it should permit ALL male soldiers to grow beards and wear their hair long. If it’s not a matter of safety (for example, being able to wear a gas mask properly), cleanliness and uniformity of appearance then why should the majority of male soldiers who don’t belong to some fringe religious group be forced to submit to the ritual humiliation of being shorn and clean shaven?

The fact that Norse paganism is now receiving recognition from the Service as a legitimate religion rather than being summarily dismissed as faddish nonsense actually fascinates me. Given the rate at which our society is fragmenting, little should truly surprise us anymore. I must presume then that if enough Norse pagans join the Army they will want chaplains of their own. But where would such chaplains come from? There is actually very little we know today about the day to day rituals and worship services of Norse paganism, except that they had pretty spectacular funerals according to the 10th Century Arab historian Ahmad Ibn Fadlan.

According to the U.S. Army’s rules, to be accepted as a chaplain one must be certified by an “ecclesiastical endorsing authority”. Meaning that a church organization must vouch that the candidate meets all the requirements for being a clergyman in that religion. Does an ecclesiastical endorsing authority for Norse paganism exist? I would imagine Norse pagan chaplains would really be something to see. Nearly all Christian and Jewish chaplains decline to carry weapons on religious grounds (although chaplain’s assistants are armed). A Norse chaplain on the other hand would probably WANT to carry weapons, as well as insist on engaging in combat. How else is he going to get the opportunity to go to heaven (Valhalla), eh? It will be the chaplain’s job to exhort the troops to perform great acts of valor. To slay the enemy without pity, to seek recognition as a hero and to see death in battle as the ultimate honor. After all, a man will die on the day the Norns have decreed, whether it’s to be in his bed or on the battlefield. So there’s no reason not to be bold and courageous.

“The U.S. Department of Defense recently revealed that a U.S. Marine artillery battalion (1st Battalion, 10th Marines) fired more rounds (35,000) in a single campaign (Syria June-October 2017) than any American artillery battalion (army or marine) since the Vietnam War. The individual marine 155mm howitzers also fired more round per gun and fired the largest number of GPS guided rounds per gun in one campaign. Moreover, there were never more than six of the marine 155mm howitzers in action at any one time.”

During the five months of the fighting, the Marines were mainly supporting Kurdish led rebels fighting to take the ISIL (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) capital of Raqqa. Field Artillery: King of Battle. Field Artillery has always been the biggest killer on the battlefield; some eighty percent of the casualties in most wars being inflicted by indirect fire. The demoralizing effect of an artillery barrage can be even more profound, making “the iron in your heart turn to shit in your pants”. The more and better artillery you have the fewer casualties for your side and the more the enemy bears the burden of the war. The effectiveness of cannon and mortar fire has become magnified by precision guided munitions. Targets now can often be destroyed with a single M1115 GPS guided high-explosive 155mm shell. Even with ‘dumb’, unguided, howitzer shells modern computerized fire direction systems makes field artillery accurate to a degree that would have been inconceivable in past conflicts. One can destroy targets with fewer howitzers, fewer shells, less possibility of collateral damage to nearby civilians and in close proximity to one’s own troops with less danger of fratricide. These technological advances enabled a single USMC 155mm battery of six guns to provide effective fire support for Kurdish forces during the five month long campaign to capture the ISIS capital of Raqqa. All this at much less cost that with airstrikes and missile strikes. A feat that in the not too distant past would probably have taken at least four artillery battalions of 18 guns each to accomplish, along with a much bigger logistic footprint to support the force. With a single battery deployed, the Marines could have provided much of its logistic support by helicopters and Osprey from Navy vessels just offshore. FYI: 1st Battalion 10th Marines is stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC.

Just about any implement you might use to fend off a criminal assault on the street has been judged by the government of the UK to be an ‘offensive weapon’. If you are found by police to be carrying said implement on your person in public, while not actively engaged in the labor for which it was devised, you will be arrested . Naturally these laws prohibiting carrying ‘offensive weapons' have failed to seriously deter the criminal element that has been allowed to take up residence in Great Britain, as evidenced by the huge spike in ‘knife crime’ across the island.
