A Festival Contemplates the Beyond
New York, NY: June 1, 2018. The historic Gene Frankel Theatre (24 Bond Street Art Center), one of only a few surviving vest-pocket theaters left in Manhattan, is hosting Secrets of Outer Space: Into the Great Beyond, a short film festival fully dedicated to exploring outer space, space travel, time travel, extra-terrestrial life, and alternative dimensions. Ten films, each between 5 and 10 minutes long, will be selected among narrative, music video, documentary, and experimental submissions. This is an official Open Call for submissions. Please visit withoutabox and filmfreeway for details and deadlines. Festival will occur in January 2019.
Curator of the event is Lower East Side indie filmmaker Jeffrey Wengrofsky, who has released seven short films on countercultural artists and is finishing his first feature film. Secrets of Outer Space is the fifth installment of Wengrofsky’s “Secrets…” series. Each of the Secrets programs selects ten short films on a specific topic: Secrets of the Deep: Dreams on Film, Secrets of the Heart, Secrets of the Insect World, Secrets of the Intoxicated Life, and the new program exploring the beyond. Secrets of the Deep received a rave review by Graham Fuller, a member of the prestigious NY Film Critics Circle:
Cold Lips Magazine (UK) also featured an interview about the Secrets series:
As the telescopes of Galileo and Edwin Hubble decentered our sense of the universe and Antony van Leeuwenhoek’s microscope first revealed life hitherto invisible to the naked eye, Secrets of Outer Space will deploy a visual device - cinema - to plumb the mysteries of that which lay outside unassisted sensory knowledge. Rooted in the belief that exploration need not require a trip to an observatory or a ticket aboard Elon Musk’s SpaceX, this film festival will endeavor to go beyond where any film festival has gone before! Secrets of Outer Space: Into the Great Beyond, will explore space travel, time travel, extra-terrestrial life, and alternative dimensions. Ten films, each between 5 and 10 minutes long, will be selected among narrative, music video, documentary, and experimental submissions. ALL REVENUE FROM TICKET SALES WILL GO TO SUPPORT THE GENE FRANKEL THEATRE.
