An argument I first heard aired by James Bowery is that co-evolution of European man and dog allowed and selected for individualism. With the dog as a hunting partner, European man was relatively freer from his fellow tribesmen. I've nothing to contribute to the hypothesis scientifically, but ask whether you'd prefer to be a dog in China or Britain?
