Dear James,
A Letter from a Subsidy Publisher

OCT/10/18
Good day. I hope this invitation finds you well.
Your book, titled, "Darkly" has been invited to have a special spot this coming March 02-03, 2019 TUCSON FESTIVAL OF BOOKS to be held in University of Arizona Mall and April 13-14, 2019 LA TIMES FESTIVAL OF BOOKS to be held in University of Southern California campus.
We have received feedback from our online re seller partners (such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble).
That your material has received good customer review but as of the moment it is not doing well in sales and in marketing and our in-house reviewer believes that your book needs more exposure to the reading public.
We believe that this book would have a high percentage of audience during this event, and we would love to promote, present and sell copies of this type of material in the Fair.
If you're considering this plan, please contact us at your earliest convenience to know further details.
Thanks,

James
Publishing has become such a fascinating activity.
This young lady has now called and spoken with me four times, about promoting Darkly at various book fairs, claiming, falsely to have received good feedback as stated above. [Another company did select Taboo You as my most notable book and tried to get me to pay them $200 to publish and market it. BookVinePress just wants to market for me.] I have spoken with this lady on a train, on a bus stop, while walking in the dollar store with my $16 purchase for the week and finally said this, yesterday, to her, when she asked me if she could call me again:
“Victoria, if I had $200 dollars, I’d rent a room. I, am, homeless. I cannot afford your service, although it sounds reasonable and you can tell your employers I said so. I will be glad to speak to you again, because being an old, broke, homeless dude places extreme limitations on conversations with young women. Okay—but I won’t be paying for your service. In fact, I cannot afford to send you the 10 copies of the book you want to put on display at the fair and at your store.” [Which is hilariously in San Francisco.]
The really fascinating thing about this is that it is all a lie. There is no customer review of Darkly, which has only sold 2 copies in 4 years. The fact is, this company knows about Darkly because I once did pay them to publish it and they failed to, as they had no one with a good enough command of English on staff to speak with about corrections. I wrote about this in Writing Unchained. However, their science fiction reviewer did write a detailed review of all the stories in this unedited, un-proofed anthology, which was very helpful. Their recommendation is in fact internal. The address listed above is the same as other vanity publishing outfits working under some umbrella company, of which have now solicited me concerning:
Darkly
Organa
Reverent Chandler
Taboo You
And
Yusef of the Dusk.
