“Know, O Prince…”
Shep
Shep, in Brian Fagan's Out of Eden, circa 1990, the man who actually identified the Little Ice Age conducted a debate between the "Out of Africa" and "Candelabra" theories of human evolution, in which, based on the evidence at hand, the Out of Africa theory one, that we are all Africans with minor variations cosmetically imposed by our ancestral environment, a conclusion that flies in the face of historic human experience but made us all feel good about being one accidentally disunited family.
As a boy I had followed paleoanthropology avidly and had even been kicked out of world history class for suggesting that Amerindians were in north America before 14,000 BP. Although Fagan convinced me but barely with his establishment assumptions and scientific argument, I yet clung to an idea out of my childhood vested in reading those old books about the origin of man, namely that the entire process of uncovering our deep past was accidental! Virtually all purposeful digs are the result of an accidental discovery.
Key finds from Clovis New Mexico, to the Neander Valley Germany and Oldivai Gorge in Kenya were the result of someone stumbling by chance upon some relic or bone or stone, either kicked up by volcanism along the Rift Valley in Africa, where the continent is activity splitting apart, or found during construction od natural resources prospecting. Essentially, humanity remains so stupid, that we believe that Africa is the birthplace of all mankind for one reason and one reason alone, because the continent is fracturing and revealing it's ancient secrets, while in most of the world, sedimentation, volcanism, silting, damn-building and the rise of the sea at the end of the last major ice age, naturally conspires to bury our past ever deeper from our lazy minds.
Thus we live on this island of broken men in which our mind police tell us that our origin has been definitively established by close analysis of shear chance.

I think this is what happened:

Overall, the fiasco that has become of paleoanthropology certainly brings the theory of evolution further into disrepute.
