This is a six page script for what I believe is planned as a comic. In case you have not read Hemavore, and you are into vampires, Dominck is the guy behind that. He knows all of the vampire trope stuff that I could care less about and he seems to give the reader a clear view of what strain of vampirism has taken over the world by 2143.
The Coyote Kid: Part 1 begins from the perspective of two Hispanic vampire hunters in the ‘South West Sector’ who are behaving very much like redneck tree stand hunters as they hide in a seven foot blind and reach for a beer. The rest of the story involves their interaction with two different types of vampires, one being the Coyote Kid. Thank you Dominick, for beheading a vampire! I cannot stand the slavish devotion to planting stakes in hearts in vampire fiction. Talk about a tactic designed to fail. If decapitation gets it done according to the trope in play that is much more realistic from a combative perspective.
Rather than spoil the story I’d like to focus on a moment of reflection on the part of the Coyote Kid, who is a ‘lone wolf’ type hero. He is disturbed that once turned, a vampire would bow to a hierarchy, a pecking order, and mimic the pathetic human condition. That all vampires feel the need to join a hierarchy seems to have him puzzled.
Human moments like that are really important in good horror. The author also considers the reaction of animals to a post vampire apocalypse world.
Nice work Dom.
Not being a big reader of vampire fiction, it seems to me that the collectivization of vampires began when women started writing vampire fiction. I’m glad that one man writing out there is willing to stand up to Anne Rice’s literary shadow.
