The Devil in Iron features the type of prologue that Howard does better than anyone. Lightning strikes a high-cliffed isle that was home to ancient ruins. A primitive fisherman whose fishing boat had been driven aground by the storm scales the cliffs of the taboo island and investigates the ‘cataclysmic crash’ that accompanied the thunderbolt that struck above the towering cliffs the night before.
What else is an unnamed character in the opening scene of a horror story supposed to do, but investigate the dread unknown!
