This tightly crafted short story is clearly a jab at Imperial hubris, with people from earth underestimating Martian colonists, just as Britain underestimated its colonies, Spain its colonies, the French its colonies—from whence terrorists now come generations later to avenge their nation’s former bondage.
Dick liked taking earth’s own history and tossing it out into the cosmos to be considered in his weird futuristic light.
