The trend of viewing only blacks as victims in violent interracial encounters, and demonizing any white man, or any officer of any race, for using force against a black male, has been accelerating—here it goes Jeremy, and I think it is appropriate—exponentially!
I have noticed many little reflections of this new ethos and shall be presenting them in this series. Here is one from last night.
I was listening to two female coworkers from another department discuss their work. The department is one of the two largest in the store, both of which are managed by liberal white women in middle age, who favor the hiring of women and minorities over men and whites. Whether this reflects a personal sentiment, or a very real attempt to avoid discrimination charges, is unknown to me.
The two ladies failed to communicate over an inventory issue, which resulted in a costly mistake. The senior employee, an older white woman, said that she would take the blame.
The ladies are Latoya, a young black woman who works multiple jobs, and Marge, a regular white woman of 50 or so.
Marge: “Look, you’re new. I’m the lead. I’ll tell her it was my fault.”
Latoya: “Now, not havin’ it sweetie.”
Marge: “It doesn’t make any sense to share the blame. Why should we both get in trouble?”
Latoya: “Now, Miss Marge, I’ll take the blame. You could get in real trouble. I’ll be okay.”
Marge: “I don’t want you to get in trouble on my account.”
Latoya: “Miss Marge, I can’t get in trouble. I have immunity, like on Survivor.”
Marge: “Oh—oh my.”
Latoya: “It I’ll be okay Miss Marge.”
What I read here is that the writer is "humor blind".
I am well known for my lack of humor.
For a confirmation I would refer you to this article jameslafond.com/article.php?id=859&pr=0
This is the first in a series of articles based on interviews and interactions with supermarket employees, where the human resources people have been applying a different standard to whites than blacks, based largely on a fear of an EOC case. Indeed, as a supermarket manager who one numerous EOC cases, and gave a deposition to aid another, I was often directed to hire blacks in preference to whites, and to fire only whites, unless in extreme cases such as violence or high value thefts.
My black employees often advised me of the harm done by this perception, and by the practices, and most of them, like the lady in this story, were not in favor of preferential treatment as they thought it was demeaning, and also encouraged their fellow black employees with less sense to game the system and create discord in the work place.
For such accounts I suggest checking out the Ghetto Grocer and Streets Have Eyes tags.
