Hunter Prey is a small budget C-list movie that—I suspect—was inspired by the classic Star Trek episode in which Captain Kirk was marooned on a planet with the alien Gorn commander. I generally dislike space opera, with all of the humanoid aliens and liberal posturing, and there is some of that in this film.
Although there was nothing great or special about the action, there was a consistent attempt to depict a gritty warrior-versus-warrior ethos, which largely succeeded. The director achieved some believable scenes basically by focusing on a low level foot soldier of the type used in Star Wars to decorate a swirl of a hero’s cape or a quip of a rogue’s tongue. Under our current toxic mythos tribalism can only be depicted in fantasy and science-fiction settings, so we are left with such fantastical venues as the unnamed desert planet depicted in this film—which went well with a few beers and did not put me to sleep.
The theme of the movie, in light of the introduction, is deceptively tribal, depicting—and even discussing at a few points—the fate of most of the tribes that have walked this planet—extinction. Now, living in the blooming monocultural age, in which every tribe-like organization is essentially outlawed and marching to extinction in the collective mind, small budget movies like this may be the last frontier for the tribal perspective in entertainment—for every large budget movie must end with a "we are one, we are the world, we our the latest cringing bitch of a victim writ large" message.
Hunter Prey was barely a fair movie, but it was still far better than Star Wars, and can be seen for free below.
