My favorite Christian evangelic comic book artist is back with an overview of Islam. J.T.C. devotes much of his criticism to Catholicism and our burgeoning secular ethos. However, in this 22 page flip comic—just the right size for reading on the bus, where I found mine—he goes after Islam with a “Blam!”
A bank is blown up with a suitcase bomb and the news disturbs a young atheist woman watching the headlines on the TV besides her grandfather. She asks Grandpa, “Why does this go on?”
As it turns out Grandpa is something of a theologian, and points out that the militant Islamists murdering people, “…were Not fanatics. In fact… They weren’t even bad Muslims. Actually, they’re good Muslims! They are faithful followers of Muhammad who want to carry out the will of Allah.”
Grandpa then walks the reader through a brief history of Islam’s formation, involving Mohammed’s catholic wife, and other villains, and even cites three scholarly books, including The Encyclopedia of World Mythology (2004). The lunar orientation of Islam is pretty well covered in a brief sketch, as our some early Islamic atrocities against Arabs.
By the time we hit page 18 Grandpa is well into the author’s standard Jesus saves message, illustrated by a disappointingly small midnight crucifixion scene.
This is not one of his best efforts, but it is very informative, and I recommend it for the secular reader who has not read the Koran.
