#63-19: night, seconds, eye-witness
Alex heard a drunken neighbor beating his wife in the street at 2:00 a.m. He walked outside and said, “Don’t hit a woman, hit a man.” The wife-beater picked up a two-by-four out of the gutter, hit Alex in the thigh, and then in the side of the head. The side-stroke to the head tore off half the ear and sent him face first to the pavement where he lay dead with a broken jaw. The paramedics arrived in time to revive Alex. He remained in a coma for 2 weeks and is permanently disabled. His assailant did 2 ½ years, and, as soon as he was released, broke an old man’s arm in a fight outside of a bar on a side street behind the supermarket where I worked at the time.
When you lodge a challenge, as Alex did, and it goes to court, you are now in a mutual combat, you as guilty as he of assigning to yourself the State’s exclusive right to use force. Although Alex was behaving as men of his generation were taught was ethical, his behavior was not in line with the legal system. If he had simply rushed out and interposed himself between the man and his wife the wife beater would have been less likely to escalate to a weapon, and if he had, would have not received so much favor in court.
Always keep in mind that many urban judges understand nothing about violence, because, even if they mean to do good, they are deluded liberals.
