Advancing and Angling with the Jab
Terminology for the Eleven Jab Steps to the Closed or Lead Hand Side of the Guard
© 2015 James LaFond
OCT/27/15
From simplest to most complex, these are the steps that power the jab as the boxer moves forward and to the closed or lead hand side of the guard. Their application will each be covered in their own section.
1. Push
2. Step, also heel step and falling step
3. Stutter step
4. Lunge
5. Angle
6. Rake
7. Angle
8. Pivot
9. Dip
10. Dip-pivot
11. Dip-cut
Note, that when one takes the 10 uses of the hand to jab and multiplies them by the 21 steps there are theoretically more possible applications of the jab than most boxers and coaches—including this one—can calculate. The reality is that each hand orientation has a limited range of steps that are best for it. For instance the up jab is best used with steps 7-11 with the other steps being tactically unsound for that blow. Likewise, the touch is best powered by the stutter step, and the power jab is best powered by the step, etc.
Each jab hand orientation and step will have its own section, breaking this fundamental technique down to its components so that you can develop the jabbing style that best suits your build, temperament, needs and abilities.

Amazing, JL. An emporium of jabberwocky!

BTW, have you written anything on triple G?

My son and I are looking forward to the Alvarez Cotto

bout, and beyond to the winner vs. Golovkin. All very talented fighters. When I look at Golovkin I assume I'm pretty much looking at Genghis Khan.

I promise I'll analyze some Triple G footage.
