“Ran away from the subscriber, the 30th instant, a Servant Man named John Cyas, a shoemaker by trade, about 5 feet 4 inches high, born in Chester but lived 10 or 12 years in London, and speaks very good English, had on and took with him a, a Dowlais shirt, One Osnabrig ditto, and one pair of dark striped Holland Trowsers, and one pair of Osnabrig ditto, a snuff-coloured Broad Cloth Coat and Waistcoast, the coat lined with green, pretty much worn, One pair of New Grey Stockings, country-made, and one pair of new pumps with a Good Hat, and an old wig.
“It is supposed that one William Blanch is gone with him, who belongs to Mister Francis Baker. Said Cyras, when he works holds his fore-finger of the right hand straight out—occasioned by a cut. Whoever takes up said servant, and secures him in any jail, so as the owner may get him again, shall have forty shillings reward, besides what the law allows. Paid by William Blake.
“Said Cyras came in on the ship Good-Intent, Captain George Haddon, Commander, consigned to Mister Anthony Banning of Miles River, the 24th day of January Last. All masters of ships are forewarn’d from carrying him off at their peril.”
A Missive from Mescaline Franklin
I like the threat at the end, any ship better refrain from letting him get back to England or else..another Maryland Gazette classic.
I can see why slaves from Africa would be easier to manage as it would be harder for them to escape with sympathetic help.
Fuck this country...
