Note the clothing and footwear discarded before the bound men, indicating that they have been stripped of their worldly possessions. The black man has his hair done in the fashion of a freeman.
As late as the 1830s, Solomon Northup wrote in his Twelve Years A Slave, of white slaves held in the Red River Region of Arkansas. Solomon mysteriously disappeared from the historical record soon after failing to have his Maryland-based enslavers convicted in a Washington D. C. Court.
