Another Fragment Documenting White Slavery
The one and only cruelty that the white slave did not suffer was the enslavement of his or her child at birth. However, it is clear that parents in the colonies, such as a son of a Lancaster schoolmaster, could be compelled by force to hand over their son to labor as a slave, beaten at his master’s will, and even lawfully killed, or recovered and exchanged for pistols or coin. Any nation which does not see this as slavery, but only counts as slavery the condition under which a child is born as chattel, is truly sick and deranged, and can have no concept of freedom, free will, liberty or justice.
That a man could take you from your father, work you, own you and every thread worn on your body, beat you at will unto death, and then keep you as a slave for a period stipulated and supported by the rule of law, and for this still to be counted as something short of slavery, is, above all, a symptom of a deeply hypocritical mind that would have startled the ancients for the depths of its absurdity and falsehood. The Romans and Greeks owned slaves, and admitted that this was so, and that the slave could possibly be freed under certain circumstances. But the twisted English mind conceived of a life of slavery as “freedom” so long as there was a chance at eventual pardon, and considered only a slave he whose children would be genetically cursed to follow on as replacement property for he who was worked to death at his master’s hands.
America, according to such fragmentary evidence provided in the link below, never had a proper concept of liberty, and therefore never had a chance at being anything other than a farce, a mere slight of mind to more fully shackle the masses to their masters will.
Note the attention that all of these subscribers to slave-catching notices pay to what was worn by the servant, an indication that these clothes were not owned by the servant, and that his very escape encompassed theft, and that these belongings were expected to be returned along with the chattel. This would be used as a compounding charge to extend his indenture. Also, any charge stipulated by the state for the capture and return, as well as any separate reward paid by the subscriber, would be worked off upon his return to bondage in the form of additional years under the lash. So the initial 3-7 year term of the colonial indenture or “apprenticeship” of the 18th Century—as opposed the essential life-terms of the 17th Century, could be extended indefinitely. If the master could starve you until you stole food, then your indenture could be extended. If he should beat you so severely that you sought escape, then your indenture would be extended that much more upon your capture.
Numerous period references, like this illustration, depict slavery as sanctioned by God and as holy and freedom to be an accursed state.
“This one was cut off but I was intrigued by the art…with the Devil or some Demon helping the wayward boy who does not want to be worked like an animal and then left to be tortured by Indians, or his owner…”
