While coaching this sparring session—which is supervised, tandem self-teaching, k waited for a learning point and broke it, restarting them with instructions on working that point. In terms of conditioning, Erique is in good shape but had been through a two-hour wing chun class and is muscular so hits that glycogen depletion wall.
In this session we wanted Sean sitting down on his feet and gliding, not hopping around.
Erique, when he got tired, went to old bad habits which come from doing FMA drop-stick drills which are intended to guard the low line and are simply useless in contact situations.
High stick is of paramount importance in stick-fighting and becomes more of a conditioning issue for more muscular guys. I coached Erique on closing with backhands as muscle guys like him do well with back hands and I wanted him to work to the outside of Sean’s stick.
