No boxer should spend the time to become proficient with 25 variants of the jab. If you are a fighter, keep in mind that this book is intended to supply you with a customization kit and your coach with a full range of options.
You need three inline jabs:
1. Blind
2. Sneaky
3. Power
You also need one angular jab from that list.
In case shit goes wrong you need to have two jabs from the evasive list. A slick boxer will be the guy who chooses additional options.
Your options should pair with your other skills. For example, in selecting a jab from the evasive list:
If you have a good straight right, work on a drag jab.
If you have a stand-out high-line hook, then retreat with a hop-jab so you have time to get set to rip him on the way in.
If you have an excellent cross then you want to post the jab on the retreat.
If you have a good shovel hook, learn how to fade.
If you have a pass-hook in your arsenal, scooting or shifting with the jab is a natural pick.
Beware of the pitfalls of self-coaching, foremost among these being the temptation to master more skills than can practicably be applied by a person of your athletic ability, whatever that may be.
