Below is a clinic on foot work. Notice the fact that Pep spends no time on the opponent’s center line and keeps the opponent on his center line all of the time with constant, intelligent movement. His side to side shifts are so numerous that he needs to keep his lead hand down so that he can get these men to throw, so that he can counter with power, with shovel or right. Also, the side to side motion can be a feinted slip that becomes a punch instead. Realize that with the exception of some of his teasing jabs everything he throws is a power punch. When you move this good everything can have power on it. Watch this tape a few times.
The second video, though a documentary, has better footwork and evasion. Pep was the best defensive fighter in an age when fighters were much better than they are today because they were better schooled in the amateurs and more experienced as pros. I cannot stress watching Pep’s mobility enough.
