Draw Jab
The Tall Man’s Covering Jab

If you have the need to back out, us coaches prefer you do it at a fucking angle! Okay?
But we do not box in a perfect world and you aren’t the only knucklehead that will be making unilateral decisions with bad intentions inside the ropes while we scream impotently at ringside. So, if you are moved to back off, do it with some finesse, please, especially if you are tall.
As you step back with your rear leg let a nothing jab go on the high line. The idea is just to put something in his face. If this is on the street against King Kong you poke him in the eye—now.
Just as your rear foot reaches its not-as-safe-as-you-would-like destination your jab has extended and should be retracting as your lead leg retracts.
Your rear foot will step back onto the balls of the foot.
Your rear knee will be bent.
Your rear leg will help pull the lead leg back, coiling power in this leg as the lead foot drags back lightly, not heavily, with some bend in the knee, as the hand comes back.
The lead hand only comes back to the hand-span position. If you do not have a hand-span guard this is a bad move.
Now, if your man has pursued, you can thrust a nice power jab right down the center. I like a sneaky jab through the gloves, or a three quarter fist jab to the forehead.
The entire idea behind the draw jab is that you are coiling into a waiting, power jab position. This is like a cobra punch in Gung Fu.
Danger, Danger, Jabtard Alert!
If you do not have a hand-span guard, which means there is a full pinkie to thumb space, or mitt space, or glove space, between your shoulder and the thumb of your jabbing hand, then forget all of this fancy jabbing shit and just plug away like a doomed robot. The hand-span guard is a must for nuanced jab work.
I prefer an extended hand-span after the first jab, with the hand only returning a hand-width from the target, and the pumping again. This is why we jab with the leg and not the arm.
