About 15-20 years ago the History Book Club or Military Book Club advertised a book on an Anglo-Saxon resistance fighter who held out against the Normans after the House Carls and their king fell at Hastings.
I cannot recall the spelling of the name or the title or author of the book and was hoping one of our readers might have that information. I am interested in studying this defiant episode.
Thanks you.
James
Here is a link Ishmael emailed me:
James, was his name hereward the wake?
Did you check the 'in popular culture' section of the Wikipedia link? Lots of books listed.
You need to check out Kingsnorth's THE WAKE. A powerful novel. The author is an REH fan and leads a group (Dark Mountain) that figures we're heading for a Fall. Hence, the resonance of the Norman Conquest.
While looking this up i found:
Hereward, the Last of the English by Charles Kingsley
gutenberg.org/ebooks/7815
And related to this were:
Hero-Myths & Legends of the British Race by M. I. Ebbutt
gutenberg.org/ebooks/25502
&
Myths & Legends of the Celtic Race by T. W. Rolleston
gutenberg.org/ebooks/34081
Those are all public domain books, free to download!
Now let's see who wins, the Brits or the Celts, and so goes another afternoon...
Should be in this search, somewhere.
