"Have you heard about the MMA pro stick fighting coming on line? WEKAF head piece, lacrosse gloves, and you can use your empty hand skills along the full range to be fought in a cage. I may fight in it."
-David
Below are two videos showing two very different types of stick fighting. In my book stick-fighting with the WEKAF head piece shown in the top video makes the stick an accessory in an MMA setting just as it reduces a pure stick fight into a point pillow-fight when armor is added.
The third video is a discussion of another attempt to bring stick-fighting to the combat sport table.
The man that told me he is fighting, possibly, in an MMA stick-fight, being put together by an MMA organization, said there would be standardized lacrosse gloves and a WEKAF head piece. The bout he described would take place in a cage and be somewhere between the two types shown below.
Gear is everything.
If there are no elbow pads but the gloves are heavy and the WEKAF diving bell is worn, go for the elbows. The elbow loses 30% of function with every power shot it takes.
If fencing masks are being worn the head is your money target.
Light gloves? Smack that hand.
Various Dog Brothers have attempted to get sanction for stick-fighting and I once wrote a paper for the Virginia State Athletic Commission and ISKA on the pros and cons. To make this sanctionable, meaningful as both weapon and MMA combat and spectator worthy, a type of light head gear that protects the neck and skull from fracture but permits concussive impact and will not come off, needs to be developed. The piece needs to be light and relatively soft so it does not make head cranks as ridiculously easy as they are with the modified hockey helmet. I recommend WEKAF mitts with batting gloves for hand gear and the use of elbow braces, not pads—and cups, of course.

I would love to throwdown at a local Dog Brothers gathering. Seems all they do is a forehand/backhand slashwith a roof block and clinch.

The best Dog Brother is Lonely Dog from Europe. look him up. The problem is even the fencing mask can be gamed. Almost nobody hits hard enough to stop you flat out with one head shot with that mask. So with the Dog Brothers, as soon as one finds out he has the weaker stick he just looks for a clinch and take down and then the mask comes off and its almost over.

I'll keep you posted on what I find as far as opponents.

That has got to hurt. See that guy pummeling the guy in the ribs with the hand end of the stick? Ouch. Once a couplke friends of mine were at a park. One got into a fight with some Cholos. He was doing fine but one of the cholos friends had to make it two on one. The other friend wasn't having this so he took his buck folding knife and "folded" jabbed the second teamer man in the ribs with the folded Buck. He said he curled up on the ground and shook.
