I think you will be interested in Greg's talk about Esotericism and Leo Strauss that start at 2:05..reminds me of what you have noticed in Beowulf and The Iliad.
Katherine Alexander is the author that clued me into how the greatest hero of the Iliad and his handling by The Poet were actually war protest inclusions, an anti-hierarchal subtext, in her book The War that Killed Achilles. I simply applied her method to Beowulf, Gilgamesh and The Song of Roland.
