Eating on $20 Per Week
A Ghetto Gourmet Update: Inflation even catches up with lowlife writers

AUG/19/16
I have spent my $20 food allotment for the week at Mister Mike’s store, just down the road in the ghetto:
$3.00 1 42-ounce canister of quick oats
$2.00 4 9-once packs of fresh Exotic Mushroom ravioli
$2.00 2 8-once wheels of Il de France Camembert Cheese
$1.09 1 18-pack of corn tortillas
$4.00 1 16-pack case of Tina’s beef, bean and hot pepper burritos
$4.04 3 pounds of ground pork shoulder
$1.39 1 bunch of giant garlic
$1.09 10 cinnamon sticks [for bottling my own tea]
$18.61, together with the 50 cents left over from last week, leaves enough for me to buy tonight’s bus ticket.
I do have a drawer of canned vegetables donated by a concerned lady, and a canister of Knox gelatin sent from the Left Coast by Latina Lynn, 30 ounces of good whisky and seven National Boh beers to round out the weeks supply. There is no way I consume all of this in a week, so next week’s larder is already begun. My long term store of food, in the form of dried peas, beans and lentils are left over from last winter and should be eaten early this winter.
