I have recently had the pleasure of reading and posting a short story by science-fiction novelist V. J. Waks. The title is Hunger and the storyline starts taut, proceeds taut, and ends taut. I don’t know the lady, but if I had to guess at any cinematic influences that might have inspired this story I would say it evokes both The Thing [most closely the original 1950s version], and Forbidden Planet, another 1950s science-fiction classic. As far as literature goes, I would compare the feel of it most closely to Robert E. Howard’s Tower of The Elephant, which I regard as his best short work.
Hunger is firmly in the horror category. However, it is written in such a way as to leave a science-fiction possibility. The story itself concerns a five-man team of scientists manning an ecological research station. If you want to know anymore go to the fiction page and click on Hunger.
