A Requiem For a Neighborhood Grocer

Effe was a good friend of mine—knew him well, very well, classy Iranian man, good to the customers, had the grocery at the corner of Gulf and Highland, two blocks from Eastern Avenue. I was born and raised across the street at 313, lived there most of my life. Eventually you have to up and go. Worked around the corner, at Santoni's, most of the time. The neighborhood has gone to shit.
During the riots these three kids from Patterson High came in there, in their school uniforms and shot him.
Police were not dispatching.
Ambulances were not dispatching.
There was—it's been told—an investigation. But they'll never get the kids. People don't even talk about the killings [that happened] during that time.

It was a real shame. He was a good man—but good doesn't cut it in Baltimore.
