‘In the Throat of the Valley’
Tor House by Robinson Jeffers

Reading from Selected poems, page 44
Jeffers discusses the reversal of the earth’s magnetic field in Tor House. He does so from the perspective of a future person happening along upon the wonderful niche of the world risen from granite, which houses his ghost, returned to elemental form.
Out goes his invitation across the ages:
“Come in the morning you will see white gulls
Weaving a dance over the blue water, the wane of the moon
Their dance-companion, a ghost walking
By daylight, but wider and whiter than any bird in the world.”
Robinson Jeffers reads like a man who wished magnetically for a return to the elemental sphere from which he had been separated at birth.

This guy is interesting. He says Magnetic Reversals are directly tied to extinction events. He says that during reversals the volcanoes on Earth seem to let loose and large earthquakes happen. It's not clear why this might happen but it doesn't seem unplausible. He does make a good case based on the magnetic reversal scientific data. Note that many time the field doesn't completely swap it just moves then snaps back. Also note that the Earths magnetic field is right at this time moving faster away from the poles than any time in history. It's also weakening dramatically. Yikes!
