Just caught this video of an unarmed youth taking on one of his oppressors round about Highland and Lombard. This is official BCPD footage. I suggest viewing it and the comments before it gets scrubbed.
My question: What, if anything could this poor old guy with a cane done to survive? (Negating the obvious turning away from his soon to be murderer move). What if anything can one do if grounded and set upon by an attacker with a knife?
Lastly note the bop that the young peacemaker has adopted in the cctv footage shown after the stabbing. Cock of the walk....May he fall into a wood chipper feet first.

The cruel thing about the cane, is by the time you need it you have lost the hip strength and mobility to use it as a weapon. As I have gotten to the point where walking is difficult I either leave the cane home or bring it to lean on while standing. I will use it to push me off into my attacker so I can knife him in the clinch.
As for the location, this was dangerous when it was my regular bus transfer point in the 1990s. Your observations of that area are right. The sync up with my own. I even think I know where this took place. Same side of 40 as Sherries Showbar those row houses with the hedges and for whatever reason still kept in decent order (at least last time I was there 3-4 years ago). I had a good friend living there in the mid 90's. He and his mother were essentially besieged in a kind of Omega Man scenario. No shit, I remember crashing at his house after a particularly hard night of partying and the door bell ringing...It was a door to door hooker. A bunch of Salvadorans I knew lived up in that vicinity. They rarely ventured out alone because they knew that if they did that they would end up as some sort of Latin flavored snack for the predatory class. As for your take on 40...It should be red. It is a major artery with many points of egress and ingress. It is served by multiple public transit options.
