A Saskatoon man says he will carry the scars of his mistake for the rest of his life after confronting two men who broke into his truck Thursday night.
"I really got pretty damn lucky if you want to look at it that way," Kyle Toms told Postmedia Network.
Around 10 p.m. Thursday he left his friend's house near 15th Street and Avenue N. As he came towards his blue 2012 Ford F-150, he saw a man inside.
"At that point I thought it was just him. As I came fully out of the house and he noticed me, he started getting out of my vehicle and walking down the street, I just walked across the yard and he and I exchanged words."
The man told him to go back inside and not worry about it, but Toms came closer. Then a second man stepped out of the truck, and Toms realized the first man had something in his hand — it looked like a knuckle-duster or dough cutter. The second man pulled out a big, long, blade.
"At that point I didn't really want any more of that so I started backing towards my buddy's place and the original guy basically punched me right in the jaw and that got me startled."
As the two men scuffled to the ground, the second man chopped at the back of Toms' head. The first man got up and they took a couple more swings before escaping.
The entire incident lasted perhaps five minutes, only 15 feet from the front door.
Toms, still conscious, stumbled back to the house and called his friends for help, who were in the basement oblivious to what had happened.
"I was raining blood at the time," Toms said. "It's not that the head wounds are super serious but I was bleeding a lot."

"I should have just let the guy walk away, you know? There's nothing of value in that truck. If I had stayed where I was or went back in the house I think he would have went on his merry way. I'm wearing that lesson for probably the rest of my life."
