It bears repeating, there are three levels of military stupidity.
1. Ordinary every day stupid.
2. Extremely stupid
3. War with Russia
Kman, I recall two successful invasions of Russia:
13th Century Mongols
14th Century Mystery Meat Mongols, Tamerlane's defeat of the Golden horde—merely a brutal visit.
Both of these came out of the east.
However, as I am sure you are aware, three notable foes have pushed from west to east against Russia:
Charles the Brat King of Sweden, dashed to bits the best professional army of the age and ended up a Turkish guest.
Napoleon, squandered the best and largest professional army of the age in Russia and ended his foray a hunted animal in tights.
The best professional army that perhaps ever existed, was ground to pieces on the Russian front relatively recently.
Why not!

Yes Kman brings up a very valid point. But James, that does suppose that the people who wish to start a war between the USA and Russia intend for America to win. I will submit to you they do not. They want America to lose and lose badly. Or at the very least suffer heavy casualties such that the conflict, however it ends, can be portrayed as a loss. America will be accused of perpetrating heinous atrocities, natch. This war even if it starts within the next six days will be blamed on Trump and the Republicans. How you ask? Just watch and listen. The people who run America until noon on 20 January hate America. They hate it with a passion. They hate you too. They want to see America humbled, weakened and destroyed. They want to see you humbled, weakened and destroyed too white man. Especially if you voted for Trump. They want to see you walking around each and every day with a look on your face like you just got kicked in the balls. They want you believing that God has forsaken you and will send you "curses, confusion and rebuke on everything you put your hand to until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin because of the evil you have done" (Deuteronomy 28:20 NIV). Don't kid yourself about this. Even after 20 January the Left will still have considerable power and influence to cause mischief and make your life miserable given how they have so thoroughly infiltrated our government bureaucracies, our courts, the news, sports and entertainment media, our schools, our churches and just about any other public or private organization you can name. If President Trump is to accomplish anything at all he will have to fight back against all the attempts to destroy him as no president has ever fought back before. Including Andrew Johnson. The demonization that Ford, Nixon and George W. Bush were on the receiving end of will pale in comparison to what will be directed at President Trump. This just makes me love and support Trump all the more, in spite of his flaws. His enemies are my enemies and he is taking the fight to them like no other Republican has before. The most dangerous enemies to our freedom today are coming at us from inside our country, not from Russia.
Don't mean to be pedantic, but don't forget the Kaiser's army killed a lot of Russians and gained a lot of territory—and then, through the mystery and magic of the Russian Revolution, forced a peace treaty on the Reds that ackowledged and accepted their gains on the ground.
