“The first law of war is to preserve ourselves and destroy the enemy.”
- Mao ze Dong, “On Guerrilla Warfare”, 1937
“In the absence of orders, go find something and kill it.”
- Field Marshal Erwin Rommel
“Kind-hearted people might of course think there was some ingenious way to disarm or defeat an enemy without too much bloodshed, and might imagine this is the true goal of the art of war. Pleasant as it sounds, it is a fallacy that must be exposed: war is such a dangerous business that the mistakes that come from kindness are the very worst. The maximum use of force is in no way incompatible with the simultaneous use of the intellect. If one side uses force without compunction, undeterred by the bloodshed it involves, while the other side refrains, the first will gain the upper hand. That side will force the other to follow suit; each will drive its opponent toward extremes, and the only limiting factors are the counterpoises inherent in war. This is how the matter must be seen. It would be futile – even wrong – to try and shut one’s eyes to what war really is from sheer distress at its brutality.”
- Karl Von Clausewitz, On War, Chapter One, 1834.
Destroy the Enemy and His will to fight!
The major problem the Trump Administration faces in prosecuting any armed conflict, like its Republican predecessors, is that at least a third of the people living in America today WANT America to lose. Against ISIS or anyone else. These people, the Progressive Left, are in general well placed to undermine the American war effort, or anything else the Trump Admin wishes to accomplish for that matter (i.e. the Deep State bureaucracy, academia, big city government and the news and entertainment media). They want America to lose because: A. They believe America deserves to suffer defeat and be humbled because they believe America is evil, completely wrong in everything that matters to them; B. They believe that if America loses it will empower them and enable them to achieve their political and social goals (as happened in the aftermath of Vietnam); C. They believe if America loses it will punish the people in America they hate, and to them punishing the people they hate is even more satisfying than achieving their own goals; D. Last but not least, they believe they will personally be unaffected by such a loss, since they believe the bad foreign people America is fighting against will be unable to figure out how to cross the ocean to get at us. Even if the bad foreigners should figure out how to strike at us (as on 9-11 et al), as former President Obama opined America is big enough to absorb a hit. And what is unstated is that many of the people who would be killed in any massive terrorist strike on America would be people the Anti-American Progressive Left hates and wants to see harmed anyway.
Because any Republican President can count on the fact that the Democrats will endeavor to sabotage anything and everything he does, it henceforth makes nearly any foreign military intervention by America inadvisable and just not worth the cost in blood and treasure (not to mention the fact America is broke). Like with Iraq, in spite of the operational difficulties AND the efforts of the Democrats in Congress and the media to cause W. Bush to lose the war there, it was won, until President Obama decided to lose it. Now thanks to Obama the problem of ISIS has developed into a festering sore, a turd that won’t flush, and begs for something to be done to remedy it, as with Saddam and his weapons of mass destruction development programs 14 years ago. Thus it is incumbent upon President Trump to do something about ISIS, and Afghanistan, WITHOUT being drawn into an expanding conflict that serves no American interest (vital or otherwise), as his predecessors W. Bush and Obama were. Can God-Emperor Trump do it?

"... Like with Iraq, in spite of the operational difficulties AND the efforts of the Democrats in Congress and the media to cause W. Bush to lose the war there, it was won..."
Not so. The war in Iraq was never meant to be won. It was fought to fragment the Arab States and get them to fight each other instead of attacking Isrаel. In that, so far, it has been successful. I submit this goal will eventually fail as the myriad of little wars will shake out a true leader who will combine forces. It is possible to halt this progress by putting the States back together bu tit won't be easy.
There's lots of evidence that they didn't want Iraq to be stable. One of the easiest to point at was the British special forces that were caught planting car bombs in Iraq and the funding of ISIS in Syria.
W. Bush is a total piece of shit and should be in jail or better yet executed.
