“Like I’ve said once or twice, the worst problem with being poor in today’s America is not that you can’t afford to buy enough food, it’s that you can’t afford to get away from other poor people.”

Strange case. Sounds like the young woman came down with a bad case of Stockholm Syndrome. She passed up a chance to escape during the gas skip. A fortunate rescue then. Had this not been a small town with an alert, concerned gas station employee and local cops willing to pursue, it appears she would have driven off and returned herself to captivity. In small towns people are more inclined to be helpful when they see people in distress since the are not forced to deal with criminals, hooligans, frauds, drug addicts, hookers, bums, lunatics and assorted other weirdos and street people on a daily basis like in the big city. That can wear you down and harden your heart in short order.

“He and armed associates allegedly confronted memorabilia dealers Bruce Fromong and Alfred Beardsley and took pieces of Simpson’s memorabilia from them. Simpson was convicted on charges including kidnapping, armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. The former college and pro football star said at his sentencing that he was trying to reclaim family heirlooms and other personal items that had been stolen from him, and claimed that he was unaware his associates were carrying guns.”

Escalating drug deaths in West Virginia drains funds for burials
At this rate WV will have to start burying its dead dope fiends in communal graves. You know, like what happened with Mozart when he died broke back in Eighteenth Century Austria.
“West Virginia has paid for so many burials for poor people who died from drug overdoses that funds ran out five months before the end of the fiscal year, according to a funeral directors group. Over 33,000 died from opioid addiction in 2015. The state’s health department set aside about $2 million annually for burial costs for poor people. Funeral homes are offered $1,250 to cover individual burial expenses when the deceased has neither the funds nor anyone able to cover the costs.”

"...33,000 died from opioid addiction in 2015..."

That can't be right. It's 1.8 of the population there. On average there are "...about 30,800 fatal crashes during the year...", in the whole USA. If that number is correct then...wow!

Here's the numbers I found,

"...Overdose deaths (9,580) from synthetic opioids, most of them fentanyl related, skyrocketed by 73%. Deaths that involved prescription opioids (17,536) rose just 4%.

And deaths attributed to heroin (12,990) went up 23% in 2015...".
