Two former government officials warn of the grave danger posed to the USA by the North Korean nuclear threat. Both from nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) and from a satellite delivered electro-magnetic pulse (EMP) attack.
“Two North Korean satellites, the KMS-3 and KMS-4, presently orbit over the U.S. on trajectories consistent with surprise EMP attack. Why do the press and public officials ignore or under-report these facts? Perhaps no administration wants to acknowledge that North Korea is an existential threat on their watch.”
“According to the Congressional EMP Commission, a single warhead delivered by North Korean satellite could blackout the national electric grid and other life-sustaining critical infrastructures for over a year—killing 9 of 10 Americans by starvation and societal collapse.”
Considering all the existential treats facing our great land, I’m prone to consider that it might not be all bad if 90 percent of the population were to perish within a year following an orbital EMP attack. Especially if most of the damage could somehow be localized to the centers of power on either coast. As all those people passed so would most of the social and political problems that vex and annoy us daily pass. For one thing there wouldn’t be any need to try to reform entitlements, would there? Also consider that it seems like a not insignificant portion of the people living in America today claim they hate it and want to see it destroyed. All right then. I wish for those people that some day they will be able to wake up in a place that is not the America they hate so much.
Incidentally, if up to 90 percent of the current population of 329.95 million (2016 estimate) were to be wiped out, then America’s population would return to a level roughly equivalent to what it was at the time of the 1860 census: 31,443,321 (this included 3,953,761 slaves, representing 12.6% of the total population). By comparison the current population of Canada was estimated to be 35, 589, 809 as of 1 January, 2015. I must imagine that any EMP attack that destroyed the U.S. electric power grid would also do considerable damage to the grid in many of the populated regions of Canada adjacent to the USA, as well. Especially considering that the Canadian and American electric grids are interconnected, such that Canada makes in the neighborhood of 3.8 billion dollars annually (2008) selling surplus power from its hydroelectric and nuclear power plants (which combine to make up two-thirds of Canada’s power production capacity) to U.S. states. Northern Mexico will likely suffer greatly too for the same reasons. Many of that 90 percent who will perish in America will no doubt be Mexican citizens. The survivors among them will likely head back home where a least winters won’t be as harsh.
Oh yeah, an EMP strike that brings down the power grid would also destroy Internet access. That would suck! Among the other difficulties that will present, folks will have to go back to getting their smut from clumsy and less convenient analogue sources, like books and magazines. It won’t be right there on your smart phone anymore, will it? Hmmm…I’ll have to build a Faraday cage for a lap-top, some hard drives and an LED projector. For a generator too. People are likely to become starved for escapist entertainment following such a disaster, won’t they? Like they say, chance favors the prepared mind.
