A Friend of mine is writing a how to boxing book, and asked me for some input on training punch combinations. Here is a slice of my answer. If you want to get the whole answer along with his insights and methods the book should be out early in 2014. I’ll give you a heads up when he lets me know it’s ready to release. In the mean time, this is the learning sequence I suggest for training a combo from the ground up.
Combination Training Sequence
1. Slow drilling on the line
2. Quick drilling on the line
3. Drilling in the mirror at various speeds
4. Shadowboxing in the mirror
5. Shadow boxing without the mirror [preferably in the ring]
6. Bag drills
7. Integrating the combo into freestyle bag work
8. Mitt drills
9. Sparring drills
10. Integrating the combo into your sparring
That is a bit more methodical than is normal in boxing, and actually comes from what I’ve learned training for stick-fighting. I hope it’s useful.
