Oh well, to paraphrase Ann Coulter the Lefty’s in the media know about guns the way they know about Christianity, not at all familiar with either. The media frequently misidentifies and/or mislables firearms. It turns out the perp used an SKS semi-automatic rifle.

“The SKS is a Soviet semi-automatic carbine chambered for the 7.62×39mm round, designed in 1943 by Sergei Gavrilovich Simonov. Its complete designation, SKS-45, is an initialism for Samozaryadny Karabin sistemy Simonova, 1945 (Russian: Самозарядный карабин системы Симонова, 1945; Self-loading Carbine of (the) Simonov system, 1945).”

The SKS has a ten round fixed box magazine that is loaded with cartridges held in ten round metal stripper clips. It was invented toward the end of World War II and used extensively in the Korean War, the Vietnam War and other wars of revolution and liberation around the world. It was supplanted in Soviet service in the early 1950’s by the AK-47. Variations of the SKS were extensively manufactured by Soviet client states like Communist China and Yugoslavia. Imported surplus SKS rifles sold widely in the USA during the 1980’s and ‘90’s

The 7.62x39mm cartridge used by both the SKS and the AK-47 is ballistically similar to the .30-30 Winchester cartridge. The 7.62x39mm has a slightly longer range than the .30-30 because it is able to use more aerodynamically efficient ‘spitzer’ (pointed) bullets owing to the box magazines in the rifles it is chambered for rather than the tube magazine on most lever action rifles chambered for the .30-30 cartridge. The .30-30 cartridge by contrast is loaded with older style round bullets almost exclusively. Round bullets are regarded as being safer for cartridges intended for use in rifles with tube magazines since the blunt tip of the round bullet precludes the possibility of igniting the center-fire primers of any of the cartridges in the tube, stacked end to end one on top of the other, when the recoil of the gun slams them all together. Both the 7.62x39mm and .30-30 are excellent cartridges for deer hunting at ranges under 200 yards (when loaded with appropriate soft-point hunting bullets), such as in the brushy woodlands and compact countryside usually found east of the Mississippi River, and also owing to the fast-handling characteristics of the rifles typically chambered for those rounds.

As it turns out the SKS is a rifle that is legal to own in Illinois and thus at this point it appears that James Hodgekinson acquired all his guns legally. It is reported now that Hodgekinson did posses a Fire Owner Identification (FOID) card, in compliance with Illinois law, and even had a Illinois concealed carry permit (CCW). His Illinois CCW was even honored in Virginia in accordance with existing state reciprocity agreements on concealed carry.

Also to own or purchase firearms, and even purchase ammunition, an Illinois resident must possess a State Firearms Owner Identification (FOID) Card. While James Hodgekinson’s driver’s license is in the hands of the authorities there is no indication of whether or not an Illinois FOID card was found among his possessions. Clearly Hodegkinson was in violation of all sorts of firearms laws in his state of residence by being in possession of an AR-15 or AK-47 look alike or any other type of semi-automatic assault rifle copy. Of course such laws are no impediment to people with evil intent, they never were. Now that the American people fully realize their political rulers posses neither the ability nor the will to protect them personally from crime and terrorism, there is no way they will give up their guns.

Indeed, we are already in the midst of a ‘cold’ civil war in America, or a low intensity conflict (LIC) if you prefer.
