The switchblade bans of the 1950’s were some of the original ‘feel good’ anti-crime initiatives. All they did was make their sponsors feel good and restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens while doing nothing to suppress violent crime. Except for the fact that Hollywood seemed obsessed with portraying switchblades in crime dramas nobody could empirically prove that they were employed in crime anymore than any other type of knife. In fact the incident of knife assaults actually went up following the federal switchblade act of 1957 banning the manufacture and sale for interstate commerce of switchblades.

The ‘Knife Rights’ organization has been quietly and very effectively lobbying to repeal the archaic switchblade bans at state level. It is also working rationalize knife laws in general to increase citizen freedom to carry and employ the implements of their choice.
