I read about this anthropologist that worked with the Indians in the Amazon rain forest. The scenario is similar. Most people like to stay in smaller groups of 50 or so people. Cozy. The problem is in some groups there's a serious asshole who attacks every one. He makes larger groups. The only reason that people stay in the larger groups is the asshole uses the larger groups to attack smaller groups and kill them. So you can't leave or you'll be killed and if you stand up to him and don't do what he says, you'll be killed. A few assholes drive and push all the violence. This sounds way similar to the Chimps. Large tribe. Ruthless control in the tribe. Attacking others.
