Well read on. In short it’s an ingenious device for making a semi-automatic AR-15 style rifle engage in rapid fire that resembles full-automatic fire while still technically being semi-automatic fire. The semi-auto rifle still only fires one shot per each individual pull of the trigger, but it uses the recoil of the weapon to enable the shooter to do so very rapidly.

“A human can’t simulate automatic fire on a semiautomatic naturally because a finger can’t pull the trigger fast enough. A “bump stock” ingeniously avoids that problem by making the gun itself do the work. The Trace describes how it operates: “Instead of pulling back the trigger to fire, the user places his or her finger slightly in front of the trigger and pushes the whole gun forward with steady pressure. The trigger hits the finger and the round goes off. Recoil pushes the gun back, but the shooter’s forward pressure immediately returns the trigger back to the finger, and so the gun fires off another round faster than the blink of an eye.”

Owning a full-automatic ‘machine gun’ is expensive. Not only are the guns themselves expensive (the number of full-automatic weapons available for private ownership was frozen to those manufactured before may 1986), but you must pay fees and jump through bureaucratic hoops to satisfy the legal requirements for ownership as long ago established by the National Firearms Act of 1934. Probably more than you’d want to spend if you are a person of modest means and all you want is the enjoyment of shooting down a bunch of empty beer cans with a burst of machinegun-like fire in the ravine in back of your house. The pursuit of good, clean fun is the mother of invention.

As the article opines, if Paddock DID employ bump-fire stock equipped rifles to commit his murders it is highly likely that the manufacture and sale of these devices will soon be subject to many restrictions, if not outright prohibition.
