It has been common wisdom in Baltimore City that the Eastside always saw more stabbings because ethnic whites and Latinos liked the proximity of the blade as a killing tool and that the blacks of West Baltimore, preferred shooting their friends in the head.
I have long held to this opinion.
It seems I am wrong. It seems that there is something about cross-cultural behavioral traditions or the actual geography of East versus West Baltimore that encourages the blade. In Baltimore, killing is usually done at arms length, whether with a gun or other means.
Blade use is up over all, as is blade carrying.
The adoption of the blade as a sidearm by blacks has been a recent phenomenon evolving out of fear of additional sentencing for handgun violations over the past 10-15 years and the increasing inability of black men to fight effectively, a masculine plague effecting other races as well.
The case of Christopher Yancy, below, who was butchered by the mother of his son, as they waited for his procedure to be completed in a hospital patient room, also points up the fact that knife violence has crossed gender and race lines, proportionately more than gun violence, which may indicate increased racial or gender animus between the victim and killer.
Christopher Yancey
Found on October 13, 2017 at 2:13 PM
Location: 1800 Orleans St
Baltimore, MD 21287
Race: Black
Gender: male
Age: 33 years old
Cause: Stabbing
Died at: Johns Hopkins Hospital
Notes: Yancey was fatally stabbed inside Johns Hopkins Hospital's Children's Center while waiting for a procedure on his son. His wife has been charged in his death. Yancey had 5 children by 5 women. His killer had 3 children by 3 men. Some of these children—certainly the boy being operated on—are now parentless.
Fatal Stabbings: 2017 through 10/22/17
Of 23 slain:
6 were slain in the central York Road Corridor
1 in the southwest
6 in the west
7 in the east
2 in the northeast
The slightly higher Eastside [9] to Westside [7] is made more significant by the fact that the road net, bus routes, clustering and proximity of the 6 central stabbings place them as part of the East Baltimore trend, while the Southwest stabbing belongs with the western, for reasons of road net, bus routes, spacing and distance. While York Road is the traditional east-west demarcation, the actually physical obstacle of I-83 and its associated highly protected affluent neighborhoods serviced by this artery, is the functional east-west divider.
This results in a an east-west stabbing disparity of 15 to 7.
Demographic Breakdown of Stabbing Victims
Under 18 = 0
Age 18-25 = 4
Age 26-34 = 8
Age 35-50 = 7
Over 50 = 4
Most victims are in the new combative prime, as individual men in their 30s and 40s are far more effective combatants than the under 25 testosterone deficient demographic. Men are usually stabbed by people close to them who do not judge themselves capable of doing in the subject of their wrath empty-handed. The age trends above jive with my previous research on the advantage knifer.
Black Male = 16 of 23, compared to 234 of 286 overall, 4 times as likely as a black female, 8 times as likely as a white male and 16 times as likely as a white female, to be stabbed to death.
Overall, black males are 11 times as likely to be killed as black females, 12 times as likely to be killed as white males and 33 times as likely to be killed as white females
Black Female = 4 of 23, compared to 21 or 286 overall
White Male = 2 in 23, compared to 19 of 286 over all, marking whites as unlikely stabbing targets
White Female = 1 in 23, compared to 7 in 286 overall
Overall, the danger of stabbings and the danger of being killed by any means, track primarily in relation to contact with blacks.
Baltimore Stabbing Risks
Primary:
1. being black
2. having social contact with blacks*
Secondary:
1. being male
2. being a physically mature man
Tertiary:
1. living east of I-83
*Dropped Indicator: Where one was once twice as likely to be stabbed at night than during the day in the 1990s, in Baltimore, nighttime and daytime stabbings are now identical [11 and 11, with one unspecified] in frequency, with darkness no longer increasing one's risk of stabbing at all, this risk having been replaced by social contact with blacks, as likely to be encountered by day as by night.
In the aggregate, the risk of being stabbed seems to be primarily reflected in the fate of Mister Yancey, of being black, in close proximity to blacks.

What Baltimore urgently needs is a well-crafted public awareness campaign to stop knife-bearing criminals. Because life mimics art, right?

How far can Baltimore be from a Detroit-like nadir, and the inflection point of a white mayoral appointee?
Parched earth to Duggan-green shoots?
We are there, with the exception of the direct infusion of some tourist dollars and the rents paid by federal employees working in D.C. Each city even ahs its own concerned billionaire savior figure at its economic heart.
