Police investigate attacks on bicyclists in Baltimore

BALTIMORE —
Baltimore bicyclists are on alert after a group of teenagers has assaulted cyclists and stolen their bikes.
The cyclists said the attacks have been happening in the same general location along the Jones Falls Trail that runs along Falls Road in Midtown.
Mike Batley and his wife went on a bike ride Sunday down the Jones Falls Trail in Midtown.
"It's a gorgeous day, the last thing you're thinking about is getting assaulted," Batley said.
Batley said he and his wife encountered a cyclist who wanted to ride along with them because a group of teens had assaulted him a few weeks earlier. A short time later, they encountered another cyclist.
"We see a cyclist in a cycling outfit with his helmet, walking. Well, I turned around and I said, 'What happened?' And he said he got assaulted 10 minutes before we arrived by 12 kids on bikes, and they knocked him down and stole his bike," Batley said.
Batley said that when police arrived, there was another cyclist inside the patrol car who had also been attacked. He's warning cyclists that this is happening with alarming frequency, involving a group of teenagers on bicycles, assaulting and stealing bikes.
Joe Traill, who owns Joe's Bike Shop in Mount Vernon, said cyclists can follow a few safety tips when riding a bike to minimize the risk of an attack.
"Sadly, I'm not shocked at all. Stories like this have been floating around for years and years," Traill said. "The No. 1 thing to do is to make sure you're aware, keep your eyes up, look for potential threats, plan your escape route, and the other thing that's equally obvious is to ride with people. There's strength in numbers. The more people on the road with you the better."
Batley said he always tries to ride with others and said he'll now carry a gel pepper spray when riding. He hopes police catch whoever is responsible and soon.
"The city has done this great work off Maryland Avenue with the bike paths and everything, and the Jones Falls Trail is really nice, but if we can't use it and can't take advantage of it because we fear for our safety, that's really unfortunate," Batley said.
Investigators have at least two police reports from Sunday's incidents.
Rock dropped from overpass kills passenger in car
Police say this rock was thrown off an overpass in Michigan on October 18.

Five teenagers from Michigan have been charged with second-degree murder after being accused of throwing a rock off an overpass that killed a man, according to the Genesee County Sheriff's Office.
Kenneth White, 32, was a passenger in a van that was traveling along I-75 near Flint, Michigan, on the night of October 18, when a 6-pound rock smashed through the windshield of the vehicle, fatally injuring him.
White was struck in the face and head, and the rock ricocheted to his chest, causing him to lose consciousness, according to Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell.
The driver told police he had to pass four other vehicles, which were disabled on the side of the road because of rocks, before he could pull over to get help for his friend.
Pickell and David Leyton, the county prosecutor, announced on Monday that the teens, ages 15-17, are being charged as adults with one count of second-degree murder each. They are also being charged with conspiracy to commit murder, six felony counts each of malicious destruction of property and two other lesser charges.
"It's not a prank, it's second-degree murder," said Pickell. "I don't think anybody is laughing and I think that if there's any warning that both David and I can give, is telling young people, you make a bad decision, you could be spending the rest of your life in prison."
Police said the group threw a tire and about 20 rocks, one weighing 20 pounds, off two overpasses that night, damaging several vehicles. After throwing the rock that killed White, the teens left the overpass and went to a McDonalds to eat.
"To propel the size of boulder down from the Dodge Road overpass to a 70 mph vehicle that's headed southbound, you ought to know—a reasonable person would know—that that is creating a high risk of great bodily harm, or in this case, death," said Leyton.
The teens will be formally arraigned in court on Tuesday.
"At the end of the day nobody wins. The young people are charged criminally, a young boy lost his father and all of the families are left grieving," said Pickell.

CHICAGO—
A 25-year-old Chicago woman faces a felony charge in connection with the robbery of an 81-year-old man Monday at a CTA Brown Line station in the Loop.
Victoria Dollarson, of the Humboldt Park neighborhood, was charged with a felony count of robbery in which the victim was 60 or older, according to Chicago Police.
About 9:35 p.m. Monday, the 81-year-old was riding a Brown Line train as it approached the Washington/Wabash station at 29 N. Wabash Ave., according to an alert from police. As the train's doors opened at the station, Dollarson ripped the man's cellphone from his hands, and an ensuing struggle caused the man to tumble down a staircase on the platform.
The man suffered a laceration to his right temple, bleeding on the brain, abrasions, bruising and swelling to his hands and knees, police said Monday. He was in critical condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Police said Dollarson was taken into custody just after 7:30 p.m. Thursday. She was expected to appear in bond court Saturday.

I always thought bicyclists who ride through yoof-infested neighborhoods should build themselves one of these and have a propane crucible or hair dryer forge at home to melt it down if used:
