Recently, while discussing the moral implosion of our city, my friend, Steve and I were irradiated by the giant light bulb going off in his Lithuanian head. He grabbed an old book of phone directory girth, Metamagical Themas, by Douglas R. Hofstadter, dug for a reference and then went online and pulled up a picture of The Beautiful Ones. I found it quite ironic that the rodent studies predicting human behavior in Baltimore, were conduced in Baltimore's Johns Hopkins University.
Universe 25 was a mouse dystopia experiment conducted in 1972 by a certain John Bumpass Calhoun, whose research on mouse overpopulation seems to have predicted the moral and spiritual implosion of Western Civilization.
The eminent Bumpass worked his way into a giant mouse study, as rats refused to overpopulate and formed clannish social units—essentially making them superior to humans on numerous levels.
His Mouse experiment, designed to facilitate overpopulation, eventually produced the following 10 behavioral changes, all of which correlate to changes in human behavior in Baltimore City, during the curse of my lifetime:
Among the aberrations in behavior were the following:
1. expulsion of young before weaning was complete,
2. wounding of young,
3. increase in homosexual behavior,
4. inability of dominant males to maintain the defense of their territory and females,
5. aggressive behavior of females,
6. passivity of non-dominant males with increased attacks on each other which were not defended against.
After day 600, the social breakdown continued and the population declined toward extinction. During this period:
7. Females ceased to reproduce.
8. Their male counterparts withdrew completely, never engaging in courtship or fighting. 9. They ate, drank, slept, and groomed themselves – all solitary pursuits.
10. Sleek, healthy coats and an absence of scars characterized these males. They were dubbed "the beautiful ones."
Religious readers will deny that animal behavior can predict human behavior.
Secular readers will deny that such "fictions" as God or shamanism have a positive relevance to the human condition.
Which brings this man to ask, how do humans living like mice begin behaving precisely like mice?
How is it that such behavior among humans, in fading Hellas, Falling Rome and the cannibal city of Baltimore has occurred in the wake of the majority turning away from previous notions of metaphysical manifestations on the material plane?
Must we forever reengineer Hell on earth?
